1.0 PREFACE

1.1 Scope

This Technical Guide provides guidance on how to carry out HAZID studies. HAZID studies may be carried out during the conceptual design or FEED stages of a new development and if there have been significant changes to an existing design.

1.2 Objectives

The objective of a HAZID study is to identify at an early stage the major hazards associated with a proposed design. This then enables timely decisions to be taken to address these hazards. This might involve design decisions to remove the hazard, reduce its size, provide suitable protective systems or carry out studies to assess the nature of the risk.

It is carried out by a team of experienced engineers chaired by a person who is experienced in the HAZID technique. Each area of the platform is considered against checklists of hazards. Where it is agreed that a hazard exists in a particular area, the risk presented by these hazards is considered and the planned means of either eliminating the hazard, controlling the risk or studying further are noted.

1.3 Definitions

Term

Definition

HAZID

A hazard identification method in which each area of an installation is reviewed against a checklist of potential hazards. Where a hazard is present, the adequacy of the associated risk control measures is reviewed and recommendations for action or further study are made.

2. ACTIVITY METHODOLOGY

2.1 Introduction

The need for HAZID studies shall be considered at the start of the project in the preparation of the Design Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Plan.

2.2 Responsibilities

The Project Lead EHS Engineer is responsible for ensuring that HAZID’s are carried out to an adequate standard. The following table identifies the main roles to be filled and advises on suitable people to carry out these roles.
