. PREFACE
1.1 Scope
This Technical Guide provides guidance on how to carry out Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) studies. HAZOP studies should be carried out during the FEED and detailed design stages of a new development and also on modifications to existing plant.
1.2 Objectives
The objective of a HAZOP study is to systematically review the process in order to identify the potential hazards and operability problems, review the adequacy of the protective measures and either propose solutions or identify areas for further study. It is carried out by a team of experienced engineers chaired by a person who is experienced in the HAZOP technique.

Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP)
|
A hazard identification study in which a team uses guide words to identify hazardous deviations from the design intent. The adequacy of the associated risk control measures is reviewed and recommendations for action or further study are made.
|
2. ACTIVITY METHODOLOGY
2.1 Introduction
The need for HAZOP studies shall be considered at the start of the project in the preparation of the Design EHS Plan.
2.2 Responsibilities
The Project Lead Engineer is responsibility for ensuring that HAZOP’s are carried out to an adequate standard.. The following table identifies the main roles to be filled and advises on suitable people to carry out these roles.
