  1. Introduction

 

Building and maintaining teams from Project Bid through to Award, execution and completion is key to project success. Within a successful team:

  • Each team member needs to know the strengths and weaknesses of other team members,
  • The team as a group needs to be aware of the critical actions necessary for high performance.

 

  1. Selection and Launching of Integrated Project Team

 

The key steps for this include:

  • Establish the project vision and mission
  • Identify skill/capability needs and team balance based on the mission
  • Screen available personnel from participating companies/groups to match needs
  • Select individuals with complimentary skills rather than duplicity
  • Identify balances and rectify
  • Use workshop situations and kick-off meeting to evaluate individual and team effectiveness
  • Set up Strategic Team Co-ordinating Group for on-going evaluation/review

 

  1. Typical Teambuilding Process

 

The following activity sequence would be typical for a major project team already formed:

  • Initial contact and discussions
  • Strategy and diagnosis
  • Profile analysis of personnel
  • Initial teambuilding workshop
  • Action plan and implementation
  • Action follow-up workshops
  • Reviews in advance of each project stage
  • Post start-up performance review, wrap-up and lessons learned

 

  1. Project Workshops

 

Project Workshops are used at key phases of the project to build and maintain the integrated project team. The aims of each workshop are developed by the nominated facilitator following close consultation, often involving formal interviews, with representatives from all major parties involved.

 

The format of the event is agreed by the project management of each major party. The facilitator is either an off-project John Brown Hydrocarbons employee or an external consultant. The workshop format demands impartiality openness and honesty of all participants. By using agreed processes and allowing all participants to air their opinions, concerns, wishes and beliefs, the crucial issues effecting the success of a project can be highlighted at an early stage. Group (syndicate) work, usually involving integrated teams and normally under time pressure, speeds up the team building process and allows people to work in an open atmosphere.
