This course will provide an in-depth study of each PSM element, including reviewing examples of specific guidelines and including explanation of how to integrate PSM element requirements into other company programs. Not only does this course help you evaluate program compliance for each element, but it also covers how to expand your PSM program to include the RBPS (risk-based process safety) elements as proposed by the CCPS (Center for Chemical Process Safety), a division of AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers). Our course is unique in its in-depth coverage of human factors issues missing from 90% of the implemented PSM programs in the world (and missing from the text of the US OSHA PSM regulation).

It can be hard to compare and prioritize the projects in your portfolio because there are many different types of projects. Some projects might increase revenue, some might decrease costs and some might help build internal capability. All of them have some benefit but it may not be easy to know which ones are the most valuable and which ones are the most aligned to your goals and strategies.
One of the ways that you compare projects is through a common Business Case.
Business Cases should contain the following information:
-
Description of the project. .
-
Financial model.
-
Estimated business benefit. .
-
Estimated cost.
-
Is the work required?
-
Urgency. .
-
Consequence of not performing this year.
It may seem like this is a lot of work. In fact, it might be.

The real value of Knowledge Management is in the sharing and leveraging of the information. However, you can’t share information unless you can first store it somewhere where people can get access to it..
You have information all over your organization. One of the key concepts of Knowledge Management is that much of the information can be further leveraged by not just the original recipient, but also by others in the organization. People can also take information from you and others in the organization to create new insight and new meaning that is greater than the sum of the individual knowledge components.
Sample Directory Structure.

- \Project Management Deliverables:
- \Reference: .
- \Work Area (
This sample directory structure can be used for all of your projects to be sure people know where to store and retrieve project information.

The Project Closure Report allows you to document the reasons for closing the project, as well as the steps you intend to take to do it properly. There could be a lot of loose ends to tie up, including the following.
Section 1: Validate Completion Criteria
Section 2: Close Outstanding Items
Section 3: Complete Closure Actions
Once you have completed the three sections above, you're ready to complete a Project Closure Report. After completion, the report is presented to your Project Sponsor for signoff.

Over the last ten years Project Management Offices (PMOs) have become a common sight in most medium to large organizations. In many organizations there are even multiple PMOs, each responsible for a functional department. In general, there are five types of PMOs.
Type I. Project Reporting.
Type II. Project Management Infrastructure.
Type III. Project Management Services.
Type IV. The Strategic PMO. .
Type 5. Center of Excellence.
A PMO supports the project environment generally and project managers specifically. There is no right way or wrong way to set up a PMO. Each organization chooses the right model that makes sense to them, given the needs, focus and available resources.
We specialize in helping organizations set up and run a Value-Add PMO that meets your needs. Contact us to discuss how we can help your organization.

Morale problems don’t happen overnight and they cannot be resolved overnight. These problems cannot be solved using regular project management processes. They need people management techniques. Typically, the complete causes and remedies are out of your control. However, as the project manager, there are some things that are within your control. Regardless of how much you can do, if the group sees you trying to help, they will feel better about their situation.
You need some feedback from the group to determine the cause of the morale problems. Once you understand the cause, there are usually multiple ways to help. Here are some examples.
- Be a good listener. .
- Say “thank you”. .
- Assign more challenging work.
- Provide opportunities to learn new skills.
- Make sure people know what is expected of them.
- Look for opportunities to have fun. .
- Solicit opinions and ideas from employees. .
There are many reasons for bad morale. Based on the reasons, there are also many ways to try to improve morale.

The model for work portfolios is based on the model of the financial portfolio. An important concept in our financial portfolio is balancing our assets. Balancing allows us to spread our financial risks. Just as your financial portfolio is balanced, your work portfolio should be balanced as well. When you read about portfolio balancing, almost all of the literature is focused on balancing risk. For example, you can balance the percentage of projects that you approve based high or low risk. You probably don’t want to approve too many high-risk projects. But high-risk projects have high rewards. (If a high-risk project had low reward it would not make any sense at all.) Therefore you probably want some percentage of high-risk projects in your portfolio. The term “Balance Point” is used to refer to the optimum target percentage for your portfolio balancing.

Look Both Ways Before Crossing the Gate Review
A stage gate review is a checkpoint at the end of each phase to ensure that all prior work is completed (backward look) and that the project is ready to proceed to the next phase (forward look). Here are some of the actions that need to occur.
1. Review the schedule (backward view)
2. Review the costs (backward view)
3. Review the deliverables (backward view)
4. Review the risks (forward look).
5. Validate sponsorship and business case (forward look).
6. Validate budget and resource availability (forward look)

It is impossible to categorize everyone within a profession. You can make some general assumptions about technical people, but this does not mean that the assumptions apply to everyone. One technique will not work for all people at all times. That being said, let’s go ahead and make some generalizations about the technical staff on your project.
- They tend to be introverts. .
- They tend to think more logically than emotionally.
- They tend to be problem solvers.
- They tend to be technically creative.
Understanding these general characteristics is the place to start if you are a manager of technical staff. Once you begin to understand how people work and how they are motivated, you can start to think of the best way to manage them.

Organizations have many options today when determining how to staff a project team. You can use existing employees, hire a new employee, use contract resources, or you may just decide to outsource all or portions of the project. These choices are the result of advances in communications and technology, as well as the desire of companies to be more flexible in their hiring options. Acquiring project team members is one of the project management processes that are part of "Managing Staff". Perhaps the place to start is to understand whether there are employees available in the timeframe needed for your project. It usually doesn’t make sense to hire contract people when you have employees that are available and otherwise would have nothing to do (assuming the employees have “close-enough” skills).
Let’s assume that you do not have current employees available to staff your new project. Let’s also say you work for an organization that is open to utilizing contractors or hiring employees depending on the needs of the specific project. Let’s look at some of the criteria that you can use to make the hiring decision.
